Bearding hives

_
In the summer's heat

the bees emerge upon the front of the hive

where they form a humming beard of bodies.

The instinct cools the hive,

and keeps the idled foragers

(whose over-heated flowers have paused in their nectaring)

from getting in the way of busy house bees.
